Morphosis Wins Competition to Design First CornellNYC Tech Building on Roosevelt Island

As a native New Yorker I have often looked at Roosevelt Island and asked why isn’t that space being used better, until now.  The plans for converting the island into a technology innovation center are very exciting and with ideas emerging from the hub it could benefit not just New York city’s green design evolution but help revitalize the surrounding Queens neighborhoods as well.  Morphosis Wins Competition to Design First CornellNYC Tech Building on Roosevelt Island | Inhabitat New York City.

This DIY Solar Appliance Could Shave Serious Cash Off Your Utility Bills – Business Insider

This type of DIY energy solution is exactly the type of innovation that will turn home energy challenges around.  It will only get better as solar cells and storage batteries become more efficient.  Let’s not forget integrating solid state lighting which will reduce power needs significantly:  This DIY Solar Appliance Could Shave Serious Cash Off Your Utility Bills – Business Insider.

Tesla’s Electric Car Battery Tech Could End Up Powering Your Home

I’ve always been interested in solutions that will help homes have lower to off-grid demand.  I’ve worked with many data center battery power systems where I’d wondered when this technology would be applied to houses.  Tesla has been looking into alternative uses for the technology that it has developed during its car research.  This is an excellent example: Teslas Electric Car Battery Tech Could End Up Powering Your Home : TreeHugger.

Solar power to the rescue: life, water after disasters

We’ve been tracking this technology for some time now and it provides a powerful resource in a disaster zone that has no critical resources:  clean water, electricity, communications as well as serving other purposes.  Since it is designed to leverage mass transportation systems (shipping containers, rail, road and possibly helicopter) the solution can be rapidly deployed to the most remote and inaccessible areas:  Solar power to the rescue: life, water after disasters | SmartPlanet.

Microsoft Designing Landfill-Fueled, Off-Grid Data Center : TreeHugger

Fuel cells run by biogas at the source is being tested at Microsoft and Apple.  This source of power for a data center is a very creative approach to accessing sustainable and clean power for a data centers.  There are other approaches being explored like hydroelectric and solar generation for data center clean power.  Microsoft Designing Landfill-Fueled, Off-Grid Data Center : TreeHugger.

How Is Disaster Aid Being Retooled to Meet Catastrophes That Strike Cities?: Scientific American

Disaster response has historically focused on using strategies developed for rural regions to aid people impacted by disaster.  With the increase of natural and man made disasters effecting urban areas (Fukushima, Hurricane Katrina…) organizations are looking to adapt and develop best solutions to the urban environment.  Using sustainable strategies can also make a significant contribution in making a built environment more resilient.  Sustainable solutions already look to mitigate impact as well as designing to last.  With many major cities (New York City, San Francisco…) already working to lead in sustainable solutions, disaster organizations should look to take advantage of both efforts to optimize and hasten preparation:   How Is Disaster Aid Being Retooled to Meet Catastrophes That Strike Cities?: Scientific American.

EcoMotors-Reinventing-the-Internal-Combustion-Engine

In his recent blog post, Bill Gates discusses the re-engineering of the combustion engine to a simpler more efficient design by EcoMotors.  I had recently attended an AIChE Boston conference where the panel addressed the development of biofuels and the discussion centered on fuels and hybrid solutions holding the greatest promise.

I had remembered a sizable cash prize offered sometime ago to anyone who could provide a credible alternative to the combustion engine and asked one of the panelist if a significant advancement in engine design would also offer a solution to the energy problem.  The post on EcoMotors presents an exciting potential change in engine design and could, combined with other energy and hybrid initiatives be the missing link to solving the energy efficient low impact transportation challenge:  EcoMotors-Reinventing-the-Internal-Combustion-Engine.
